Assimilation, yes, but…

Among six things listed by the President during a recent interview as a solution to our illegal immigration problem was the need for assimilation. What I have yet to hear anyone ask him is how he plans to facilitate assimilation by dealing with the problem of multiculturalism. To assimilate immigrants is to make them part of a nation’s culture. No how pretty the talk is, there is and can be no such thing as a multicultural society. Think about the two words, culture and society. Now ask yourself how you go about having a many-cultured society. You can have a multilingual society and a multiracial society, but not a multicultural society. That would be like saying that you can have a multicultural culture. A multicultural society is a balkanized society.
